Thanks. Pain is like background noise for me – it ebbs and flows in volume. Until I attended a pain clinic I was unaware how many people suffer from chronic pain. I’ve learned and experienced that ongoing physical pain has an emotional impact, and that emotional pain can aggravate physical pain.
As someone who is dealing with terrible shoulder pain right now (I’m typing with a heating pad on my shoulder), I think your poem encapsulates what pain is.
Brilliant and movingly written. I hope you are in a time zone where it is morning, and you are not awake in the middle of the night, suffering.

Nicely sliced. I am thinking more poetically as we have just begun a poetry unit in third grade. I can feel the tension in your words.

“coming to terms with a broken body” – wow, that is pain! Very well said.

“the emotional gnawing of the heart.” Wow, you nailed it. That’s such a good description. It fits so well.
And yeah, that whole “coming to terms with a broken body”…I’m still not sure I can do that. It’s hard.
